/EN/ Elisabeth laureates join Europe’s most energetic orchestra.
Music connects people and nowhere is that more true than at the European Union Youth Orchestra. Every year, the very best young musicians gather there to learn, work and enjoy. The result is their legendary concerts. For this tour, three revelations from the Elisabeth Competition will join the orchestra as soloists. And before French conductor Alexandre Bloch unleashes a fiery Bolero, we get to hear the brand new work EUtopia by Annelies Van Parys.

Muziek verbindt mensen en nergens is dat meer waar dan bij het European Union Youth Orchestra. Elk jaar komen de allerbeste jonge musici daar samen om te leren, te werken en te genieten. Het resultaat zijn hun legendarische concerten. Voor deze tournee voegen drie revelaties van de Elisabethwedstrijd zich bij het orkest als solisten. En vooraleer de Franse dirigent Alexandre Bloch een vurige Bolero ontketent, krijgen we het gloednieuw werk EUtopia van Annelies Van Parys te horen.

Threnody

/EN/ Saariaho uses beautiful imagery to describe her composition 'Solar': the basic idea seems like a sounding celestial body that forces the harmony gain and again back to its starting point, as if the music followed the laws of gravity. In 'Amers' (after the French for navigation points at sea), she paints the picture of a sailing boat trying to hold its course in defiance of the waves. Annelies Van Parys' world premiere Threnody adds a contemporary star to this sparkling concert.

/NL/ Saariaho haalt prachtige beeldspraak boven om haar compositie ‘Solar’ te omschrijven: de basisgedachte schijnt als een klinkend hemellichaam dat de harmonie steeds weer naar haar vertrekpunt dwingt, als volgde de muziek de wetten van de zwaartekracht. In ‘Amers’ (naar het Frans voor navigatiepunten op zee) schetst ze het beeld van een zeilboot die, in weerwil van de golven, koers probeert te houden. De wereldcreatie Threnody van Annelies Van Parys voegt een hedendaagse ster toe aan dit fonkelende concert.

Mew Poems

No one listens better than a tree

/EN/ This unique collaboration, built around Jacqueline Fontyn's Galgenlieder, guarantees a concert that is poetic, profound and philosophical, but also light-hearted and with a touch of absurdist humor. The musical encounter between mezzo-soprano Frauke Elsen and Trio O3 introduces us to 3 generations of Belgian Composers: from Jaqueline Fontyn via Annelies Van Parys to Fanny Libert.
3 Mew Poems by Annelies Van Parys were commissioned by the Canadian Phoenix Ensemble in 2004. They are 3 poetic songs that draw on the refined colours of the poems by Charlotte Mew (1869 - 1928).

/NL/ Deze unieke samenwerking, opgebouwd rond de Galgenlieder van Jacqueline Fontyn, staat garant voor een concert dat poëtisch, diepzinnig en filosofisch is, maar ook lichtvoetig en met een vleugje absurdistische humor. De muzikale ontmoeting tussen mezzosopraan Frauke Elsen en Trio O3 laat ons kennismaken met 3 generaties Belgische Componisten: van Jaqueline Fontyn via Annelies Van Parys naar Fanny Libert.

One of the Belgian string quartets causing a furore is undoubtedly the Sonoro Quartet. Within the European Concert Hall Organisation, they were chosen as Rising Stars and will represent Bozar in no less than 16 European concert halls during the ‘23-‘24 season. Their luggage will also contain Tsunami written especially for them by one of the most distinguished Belgian composers, Annelies Van Parys.

Eén van de Belgische strijkkwartetten die furore maakt, is ongetwijfeld het Sonoro Quartet. Binnen de European Concerthall Organisation werden zij gekozen als Rising Stars en ze zullen tijdens het seizoen ‘23-’24 Bozar vertegenwoordigen in niet minder dan 16 Europese concertzalen. In hun bagage zit ook Tsunami, speciaal voor hen geschreven door één van de meest vooraanstaande Belgische componisten, Annelies Van Parys.

A Chamber Opera

/EN/ Volver meets Hiroshima mon Amour in this moving story.
Two women involuntarily share a prison cell: a young activist who was arrested after an illegal protest and a working-class woman who murdered her boyfriend. Their forced togetherness starts tensely, but as the nights go by, they share their fears and hopes. Notwehr brings together old and new music: a cycle of baroque madrigals by Banchieri provides a sort of echo of the past and of the outside world and intertwines with the new music of Annelies Van Parys.
The witty libretto is from Gaea Schoeters and the poetic staging by Sjaron Minailo. The opera is dedicated to Maria Kaleshnikava & all other brave women who lost their freedom fighting for a better world.

/NL/ 'Volver' meets 'Hiroshima mon Amour' in dit ontroerend verhaal.
Twee vrouwen delen ongewild een gevangeniscel: een jonge activiste die opgepakt is na een illegale protestactie en een volksvrouw die haar vriend vermoord heeft. Hun gedwongen samenzijn begint op gespannen voet, maar naarmate de nachten verstrijken, delen ze hun angsten en hoop met elkaar. Notwehr brengt oude en nieuwe muziek samen: een cyclus barokmadrigalen van Banchieri fungeert als een soort echo van het verleden en van de buitenwereld, en vlecht zich zo tussen de nieuwe muziek van Annelies Van Parys.
Het virtuoze libretto is van Gaea Schoeters, de poëtische regie in handen van Sjaron Minailo. De opera is opgedragen aan Maria Kaleshnikava & alle dappere vrouwen die gevangen zitten omdat ze opkwamen voor een betere wereld.

Notwehr kwam mede tot stand dankzij een residentie bij Tokyo Arts and Space met een residentiebeurs van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap.
