A Chamber Opera

/EN/ Volver meets Hiroshima mon Amour in this moving story.
Two women involuntarily share a prison cell: a young activist who was arrested after an illegal protest and a working-class woman who murdered her boyfriend. Their forced togetherness starts tensely, but as the nights go by, they share their fears and hopes. Notwehr brings together old and new music: a cycle of baroque madrigals by Banchieri provides a sort of echo of the past and of the outside world and intertwines with the new music of Annelies Van Parys.
The witty libretto is from Gaea Schoeters and the poetic staging by Sjaron Minailo. The opera is dedicated to Maria Kaleshnikava & all other brave women who lost their freedom fighting for a better world.

Twee vrouwen delen ongewild een gevangeniscel: een jonge activiste die opgepakt is na een illegale protestactie en een volksvrouw die haar vriend vermoord heeft. Hun gedwongen samenzijn begint op gespannen voet, maar naarmate de nachten verstrijken, delen ze hun angsten en hoop met elkaar. Notwehr brengt oude en nieuwe muziek samen: een cyclus barokmadrigalen van Banchieri fungeert als een soort echo van het verleden en van de buitenwereld, en vlecht zich zo tussen de nieuwe muziek van Annelies Van Parys.
Het virtuoze libretto is van Gaea Schoeters, de poëtische regie in handen van Sjaron Minailo. De opera is opgedragen aan Maria Kaleshnikava & alle dappere vrouwen die gevangen zitten omdat ze opkwamen voor een betere wereld.

A talk about Female Makers in contemporary music.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, there is a talk with composers Annelies Van Parys and Sara Glojnaric and librettist Gaea Schoeters about female characters and roles in contemporary opera and the structural underrepresentation of Female makers in International Music Theatre.

Sonoro Quartet

One of the Belgian string quartets causing a furore is undoubtedly the Sonoro Quartet. Within the European Concert Hall Organisation, they were chosen as Rising Stars and will represent Bozar in no less than 16 European concert halls during the ‘23-‘24 season. Their luggage will also contain Tsunami written especially for them by one of the most distinguished Belgian composers, Annelies Van Parys. 

About Tsunami
"The piece is inspired by the marvelous call of the Japanese Cicadas. Their sound struck me when I was walking through the parcs in Tokyo during my residency at the TOKAS Tokyo Arts and Space. Not only their voicing, but also their rhythm as well as the strength of their call was extraordinary to my ears and I immediately knew I would use them for a string piece. When the request for Sonoro Quartet came a few weeks later, I gladly accepted because I knew this would be the perfect ensemble for my idea. So the Tsunami here is not one of water but one of Cicadas…" - Annelies Van Parys

Eén van de Belgische strijkkwartetten die furore maakt, is ongetwijfeld het Sonoro Quartet. Binnen de European Concerthall Organisation werden zij gekozen als Rising Stars en ze zullen tijdens het seizoen ‘23-’24 Bozar vertegenwoordigen in niet minder dan 16 Europese concertzalen. In hun bagage zit ook Tsunami, speciaal voor hen geschreven door één van de meest vooraanstaande Belgische componisten, Annelies Van Parys.

"Het werk is geïnspireerd op de prachtige roep van de Japanse krekels. Hun geluid trof me toen ik door de parken in Tokyo liep tijdens mijn residentie in het TOKAS Tokyo Arts and Space. Niet alleen hun stem, maar ook het ritme en de kracht van hun roep klonken me buitengewoon in de oren en ik wist meteen dat ik ze zou gebruiken voor een strijkkwartet. Toen het verzoek van Sonoro Quartet een paar weken later kwam, accepteerde ik dat graag omdat ik wist dat dit het perfecte ensemble zou zijn voor mijn idee. /EN/ Tomma Wessel and Annelies Foquaert perform music by female composers and music for the organ of the Begijnhofkerk in Mechelen.
The concert is part of the Begga Festival. Tomma performs Etude - pour les flattements of Annelies Van Parys next to pieces of Violetta Dines, Marta Gentilucci and Hildegard von Bingen.

/NL/ Tomma Wessel en Annelies Foquaert brengen muziek van vrouwelijke componisten en muziek voor het orgel van de Begijnhofkerk in Mechelen.
Tomma speelt Etude - pour les flattements van Annelies Van Parys naast stukken van Violetta Dines, Marta Gentilucci en Hildegard von Bingen.

Medea / They have waited long enough

Composers Annelies Van Parys, Aftab Darvishi and Calliope Tsoupaki create new, contemporary sounds for three women who have had to wait in the wings of the great Greek myths far too long. They shine a new light on these women’s stories, add a new nuance to them and infuse them with new power. Is Medea a revengeful monster or a mother consumed with compassion? Is Circe an evil witch or a heroine filled with great humanity? And what about Penelope’s so-called helpless waiting? 

Author Gaea Schoeters found the words that do these women justice: moving yet liberating. Soprano Katharine Dain sings them to life accompanied by the all-female Ragazze Quartet. Three colorful soloists engage in an intense dialogue on klarinet, duduk and canun.

European Union Youth Orchestra

/EN/ Elisabeth laureates join Europe’s most energetic orchestra.
Music connects people and nowhere is that more true than at the European Union Youth Orchestra. Every year, the very best young musicians gather there to learn, work and enjoy. The result is their legendary concerts. For this tour, three revelations from the Elisabeth Competition will join the orchestra as soloists. And before French conductor Alexandre Bloch unleashes a fiery Bolero, we get to hear a brand new work by Annelies Van Parys.
