Sonoro Quartet

One of the Belgian string quartets causing a furore is undoubtedly the Sonoro Quartet. Now their international dream is also coming true. Within the European Concert Hall Organisation, they were chosen as Rising Stars and will represent Bozar in no less than 16 European concert halls during the ‘23-‘24 season. Their luggage will also contain a token from one of the most distinguished Belgian composers, Annelies Van Parys. She wrote the work Tsunami especially for this tour.

About Tsunami
"The piece is inspired by the marvelous call of the Japanese Cicadas. Their sound struck me when I was walking through the parcs in Tokyo during my residency at the TOKAS Tokyo Arts and Space. Not only their voicing, but also their rhythm as well as the strength of their call was extraordinary to my ears and I immediately knew I would use them for a string piece. When the request for Sonoro Quartet came a few weeks later, I gladly accepted because I knew this would be the perfect ensemble for my idea. So the Tsunami here is not one of water but one of Cicadas…" - Annelies Van Parys

Eén van de Belgische strijkkwartetten die furore maakt, is ongetwijfeld het Sonoro Quartet. Nu komt ook hun internationale droom uit. Binnen de European Concerthall Organisation werden zij gekozen als Rising Stars en ze zullen tijdens het seizoen ‘23-’24 Bozar vertegenwoordigen in niet minder dan 16 Europese concertzalen. In hun bagage zit ook één van de meest vooraanstaande Belgische componisten, Annelies Van Parys. Zij schreef het werk Tsunami speciaal voor deze tournée.

"Het werk is geïnspireerd op de prachtige roep van de Japanse krekels. Hun geluid trof me toen ik door de parken in Tokyo liep tijdens mijn residentie in het TOKAS Tokyo Arts and Space. Niet alleen hun stem, maar ook het ritme en de kracht van hun roep klonken me buitengewoon in de oren en ik wist meteen dat ik ze zou gebruiken voor een strijkkwartet. Toen het verzoek van Sonoro Quartet een paar weken later kwam, accepteerde ik dat graag omdat ik wist dat dit het perfecte ensemble zou zijn voor mijn idee. Poèmes d'amour - Blake Fragments

Triotique likes to put women on stage, not only literally, but also through the artistic musical work of various female composers - forgotten or otherwise. With their new performance Poèmes d'Amour, delightful compositions by female composers, they introduce us to a vast palette of shades and keys. Veerle Janssens (author of the book 'woman at the piano') weaves a narrative around it, full of inspiring stories and anecdotes. In addition to Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn and Nadia Boulanger, pearls of lesser-known ladies such as Amy Beach and Pauline Viardot are also featured. In turn, Annelies Van Parys and Eva Dell'Acqua guarantee exceptional home-grown work.

Naast het in de kijker zetten van muziek voor houtblazers hebben de dames van Triotique een groot hart voor muziek van vrouwelijke componisten. Concerten van Triotique hebben steevast werken van vrouwelijke hand op het programma staan. Voor het seizoen ’22–’23 timmert Triotique aan een nieuwe voorstelling in samenwerking met Veerle Janssens (vrouw aan de piano) en Amarant, met muziek van o.a. Mel Bonis, Nadia Boulanger, Pauline Viardot, Amy Beach en een nieuw werk van Annelies Van Parys.

Noh Singer, Ryoko Aoki Concert Series “Contemporary Music×Noh” Vol.10

Semi no obebe (world premiere)

Ryoko Aoki holds a unique position in the field of Noh theatre as a female singer and performer. She has performed in several traditional Noh plays, historically the reserve of male actors. Above all, she is the pioneer of and inspiration for a new artistic form combining traditional Noh recitation with contemporary music. More than 55 works have been written for her by various composers including Peter Eötvös, Toshio Hosokawa, Claude Ledoux a.o

For the 10th anniversary of her series Contemporary Music x Noh, Annelies Van Parys wrote Semi no obebe for Noh-voice and string trio on a children’s poem about a cicada by Misuzu Kaneko. The piece was written during her residency at TOKAS Tokyo Arts and Space.

Ryoko Aoki heeft een unieke positie in het Noh-theater als vrouwelijke zangeres en performer. Ze trad op in verschillende traditionele Noh-stukken, die van oudsher voorbehouden waren aan mannelijke acteurs. Bovenal is ze de pionier van en inspiratiebron voor een nieuwe artistieke vorm die traditionele Noh-recitatie combineert met hedendaagse muziek. Meer dan 55 werken zijn voor haar geschreven door verschillende componisten waaronder Peter Eötvös, Toshio Hosokawa, Claude Ledoux e.a.

Shades of Light selected for the 2023 ISCM World New Music Days in South Africa

ISCM South Africa (NewMusicSA), the organizer of the 2023 ISCM World New Music Days selected from the Flemish entry for the 2023 ISCM Call for Works Shades of Light by Annelies Van Parys.

Statement from the jury: 
"How Annelies Van Parys continues to discover new paths and worlds in her musical language is greatly admired. In Shades of Light, the cello and electronics fuse together very beautifully.  With limited material, a lot happens in this composition."

Shades of Light will be performed during the 2023 ISCM World New Music Days in South Africa (24 November – 3 December 2023), the first ISCM festival ever held on the African continent.

Shades of Light zal worden uitgevoerd tijdens de 2023 ISCM World New Music Days in Zuid-Afrika (24 november - 3 december 2023), het eerste ISCM festival ooit gehouden op het Afrikaanse continent.
